The Italian Port City of Napoli

By Todd Gibson

If your life is lacking a bit of amore, it is time to take a trip to the southern region of Italy. Many tourists are slightly nervous when it comes to visiting Napoli thanks to a reputation filled with crime and the unknown. The truth is that real Italian life can only be seen whilst wandering the busy streets of Naples.

Napoli takes a beating in guidebooks on Italy. It is a real city. It has garbage, crime, traffic and so on. It also represents the real Italian life in many more ways than Rome or Milan. Spending time in Napoli is something you will always remember.

Also known as Naples, Napoli food is rarely talked about. It is excellent, but it will do an absolute number on your waist line. Want some proof? Pizza was invented in Napoli. That alone should make your stomach groan with anticipation.

What is a trip without a bit of jewelry shopping? Not a good trip at all. Napoli is famous for a particular type of jewelry. The works are cameos and there are shops everywhere. It is somewhat like Venice with the blown glass pieces. Yes, they are that plentiful in Naples.

In every manner Napoli is a city that is going through an amazing rebirth. Children play soccer in the middle of crowded squares as street sellers pedal their carts through whizzing traffic. While attempting to cross the street within this city takes nerve, once you understand the flow of this town it's a snap.

Napoli is not a city you visit to see attractions. It is a city you visit to experience the city and the people living in it. It is about as authentic as it gets in Italy. Take a stroll and just let it soak in. You will enjoy yourself immensely.

Once you are settled, get out and just walk the downtown area of Naples. You will find all kinds of authentic, fascinating people. You can watch talented artists turn a piece of wood into the most amazing toy. The experiences will leave you fulfilled.

You might be hesitant to check out Napoli. Do not be. It is tremendous. One visit and you will be hooked. It is my favorite Italian city. Unlike Rome and other cities, life actually feels like it is not tailored around the almighty tourist dollar.
